Uptown Dance Company welcomes award-winning choreographer, dance educator, speaker, and social media expert Barry Kerollis. Based out of both New York City and Philadelphia, Barry currently works as Ballet and Contemporary faculty at Broadway Dance Center and Steps on Broadway, and manages the contemporary dance department at Greenwich Ballet Academy. He has choreographed for numerous organizations, held the position of Artistic Director of Alaska Dance Theatre, hosts the Pas de Chát: Talking Dance podcast on the Premier Dance Network, and runs the popular blog, Life of a Freelance Dancer.
Barry began his professional career with Houston Ballet, followed by seven seasons with Pacific Northwest Ballet, where he danced leading and featured roles and worked as a delegate for the American Guild of Musical Artists. He was a Principal with Ballet X, and spent 4 years traveling the nation as a Principal Guest Artist.
As a dance-maker, Barry has been commissioned by the Columbia Ballet Collaborative at Columbia University (NYC), CelloPointe (NYC), Uptown Dance Company (Houston), and the Men in Dance festival (Seattle). In 2014, he was selected out of over 60 international applicants to choreograph at the National Choreographers Initiative. He was a finalist at both the McCallum Theatre’s 18th annual Choreography Festival and the 2nd annual Visions Choreographic Competition. Mr. Kerollis has also received an Outstanding Choreographer award at Youth America Grand Prix. Beyond these achievement, Barry has created works for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Alaska Dance Theatre (in collaboration with the Alaska Native Heritage Center), Pulse Dance Company, and four works for Pacific Northwest Ballet’s annual Next Step choreographers showcase. Barry created and directed “Core-ography: A Global Dance Storytelling Project,” a mini-documentary style web series that shares professional dancer’s life-defining stories through revealing interviews and movement.
Barry continues to shape professional and pre-professional dancers as an educator in both ballet and contemporary techniques. Beyond his current positions, he held the position of Interim Artistic Director of Alaska Dance Theatre, where he also ran the pre-professional division of their school. He has also taught for Eugene Ballet, Koresh Dance Company, National Choreographers Initiative, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, and Second Avenue Dance Company (NYU’s Tisch school). In 2015, Barry founded the AK-BK Contemporary Ballet Workshop, an intensive program for pre-professional students, to offer advanced level training for the underserved dance communities in Southcentral Alaska. Mr. Kerollis continues to work as a guest instructor offering master classes internationally for an array of students.
